This is a case by case issue. Many of the Warriors will transition out of the military and may return to their hometown or move on to a new career somewhere away from San Antonio. These Warriors may be matched with a volunteer mentor in their new hometown, should they request one and one is available. If the Warrior is returning to active duty, they will be supported by their Chain of Command and other programs established by the Services to support these Warriors.

We are a volunteer organization and are supported by a variety of volunteers, some of whom do not have any direct relationship to the military. You may make financial donations to the Wounded Warrior Mentor Program through our web site. Look for the “Donations” button on the home page. We are a 501(c)(3)EIN 27-2054018 non-profit organization and donations may be tax deductable.

Mentors are volunteers. As you meet with your Wounded Warrior and develop a relationship, you may find it desirable to cover a meal or other small cost during your meetings. Facilities are available at BAMC for meeting and you are under NO obligation to expend any fixed amount of monies. As a volunteer organization we also do not have any mechanism for reimbursing you for expenses.

Initial training usually takes a couple of hours one evening. Then when you have been paired up with a Wounded Warrior, you may expect to spend a couple of hours the first week or two getting to know each other and developing a course of action for how the two of you will move forward. If the Warrior is in a long transition process, your time together may end up being only a few hours a month. As a mentor, a sounding board, a friend, the amount of time you devote to this relationship is really up to you and your Warrior.

All of our Wounded Warriors are assigned to military organizations here at BAMC. Depending on their needs and the time in their recovery or transition process in which they request a mentor, you may be a mentor for a couple of months or up to a year. The relationship you establish with your Wounded Warrior will determine how long you stay in contact, but your primary efforts here in San Antonio will normally be limited to the time the Warrior is assigned to BAMC.

The Wounded Warrior Mentor Program in San Antonio has several ways you can help. If you are a former service member who has been in the “real world” for a while and would like to volunteer your time, we invite you to become a mentor. Wounded Warrior Mentors are volunteers who desire to help those service members who are currently undergoing recovery at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). A mentor should have extensive military experience so they can relate to the demands of the military, understand the structure, and relate to the possible frustrations and challenges of military life. Additionally our volunteers should know what it is like outside of the military. As a mentor, you will be a sounding board for Wounded Warriors, many of whom have only known the military during their adult life. Being able to relate the challenges and opportunities of the ‘real world’ to these Warriors is a critical element of our mission. Of course a desire to help, to be a loyal confidant, and to be available for a Wounded Warrior is essential. The attributes of good leaders which you gained during your military service will be the bedrock for being a mentor.
